In the fourth century, monasticism spread quickly throughout the Nile valley. The monks of Egypt were soon seen as athletes of the faith and referred to for advice and guidance by Christian elites of the late Roman Empire. This seminar explores the ascetic practices which were the basis of their authority and investigates their daily lives, their relations with the larger church, and the systems of spiritual guidance they developed. The main text will be William Harmless, Desert Christians: An Introduction to the Literature of Early Monasticism (Oxford University Press, 2004). Advanced skill in English is necessary.Termine
