This winterterm motto is „Reading Together Women's Utopian Literature in Times of Interwoven Crises“. Utopian literature is often born out of crisis creating new images, metaphors, and narratives that allow us to imagine alternative futures. Utopia is not somewhere far away; it can be found here and now, in the communal process of reading and discussion, especially in times of interwoven crisis. Women's utopian writing invites us to envision not only different worlds, but also different ways of relating to one another and to the more-than-human world. This is what the seminar formats „Salon Pantopia“ and „Mensch Frau forscht!“ are about. Together, we will read and discuss a wide range of women´s utopian literature, including Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, and by Indigenous Canadian authors. Attention will be given to the intertextual dialogue between utopian literature, sci-fi novels and mythological, religious, and spiritual traditions. Utopian and dystopian/apocalyptic writing frequently relies on mythological images, symbols, and binary oppositions to articulate visions of social transformation and renewal.Through close reading and discussion (with invited speakers), we will ask how literature can help us imagine more just, sustainable, and livable worlds—and what kinds of hope such imagination might make possible.
