Inhalt
Christians of the 2nd-4th centuries produced a great deal of literature about exceptional individuals whose spiritual achievements were to serve as a model for others. Accounts of saints, martyrs and holy men, whether in the form of martyr acts or hagiography, innovated on the basis of received traditions from the ancient world. In the context of a newly forming religion, these texts demonstrate great creativity in portraying the ideal human self.In this course we will examine the agonistic model of the self presented in these texts, and make a survey of the source materials from the Martyrdom of Polycarp to the Life of Simeon Stylite. The lectures and readings will make full use of current English scholarship on these topics.
A method of Active Lecturing will be applied, such that all participants are involved in the lectures. It is therefore imperative that each participant is fully prepared and engaged. Passive attendance without adequate English language comprehension skills is undesirable.
