Early Christian literature includes a great many writings by and about monks. Biographies of monks, like the Life of Antony, were extraordinarily influential in shaping early Christian ideals. Histories of the monks of Egypt, like the Historia Lausiaca, collected the ascetic and spiritual achievements of the desert fathers for study and admiration. Letters of instruction, handbooks for spiritual discipline, and rules for everyday practice written by monastic leaders have also come down to us. In this seminar, we will make a survey of this literature and its place in the piety of both elite and ordinary Christians.Vorbereitende Literatur
